Don’t be nice

I tried to do a nice thing and surprise my wife by signing her up to follow the blog and postings of a world famous photographer, but she got angry and would not give me her password.

She likes to take pictures but doesn’t want to try to learn how to improve her photography. She won’t read books I bought for her and won’t look at pictures I try to show her to improve technique.

The old adage that you can lead a horse to water, but can’t make it drink certainly was driven home to me today. I am suitably chastised. It does not pay to do favors, regardless of how well-intentioned they may be.

I seem to keep forgetting that lesson year after year after year.

  1. What you consider a favor may not be considered such by the other person. To them it might be looked upon as an order or an intrusion. Been there done that.

    • As always, you are the voice of reason lending stability to my chaotic existence. Thank you, and you are right, of course. I realized that when she and I sat down and discussed the incident.

  2. Being nice is not a pastime ; it is what people do when they interact with one another. Being nice does not necessarily earn you”thank yous”, but why should it? Being “nice” should be a natural trait. Being nice is different than being bossy, or thinking that you are a teacher, even though the one you are teaching does not want a lesson. Continue being”nice” that is the oil thate makes life liveable.
